Russian security services (FSB) said on Friday they had stopped an attempt to burn down a military building in the Saint Petersburg area and arrested three suspects, a type of attack that has proliferated in Ukraine since the attack.

In a statement, the FSB noted that these three residents of the city of Viborg, about 100 kilometers from the second Russian city, “intend to burn an administrative building belonging to the Russian Ministry of Defense.”

The FSB said it was investigating an “attempted terrorist act”, a crime punishable by heavy prison terms.

Since the Kremlin’s offensive against Ukraine began in late February, Russian media have reported that several dozen Molotov cocktails have been thrown or spoiled at official buildings across the country.

These incidents, which were covered up in the state press, were mostly directed towards the centers where soldiers were gathered and one-year compulsory military service summons was sent.

In Russia, criticism of the Ukrainian offensive is firmly suppressed in public or on the Internet. According to the NGO OVD-Info, more than 16,000 people have been arrested since February, demonstrating against the attack.
