LONDON (Reuters) – King Charles described the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, as the moment he was “scared” during a meeting with British Prime Minister Liz Truss, caught on television, on Friday.

The Prime Minister’s first meeting with the new monarch took place after Charles had returned to London from Scotland and was greeted outside Buckingham Palace by a crowd who had come to pay their respects to the Queen.

As they gathered in the audience room at Buckingham Palace, Charles was heard telling the prime minister, “The moment I’m scared, I know a lot of people are scared.”

Earlier, after Charles and his wife, Queen Consort Camilla, got out of their car for an impromptu walk, they spent more than 10 minutes shaking hands with dozens of well-wishers and staring at the flowery tributes outside the palace.

“We shouldn’t take up too much of your time,” Charles told Truss, who took office last Tuesday.

While offering his condolences, the Prime Minister added, “It was very touching when we arrived this afternoon, all those people who came to offer their condolences… and flowers.”

The meeting took place before Charles’ televised speech to the nation in which he promised to follow his mother’s example in carrying out his mission.
