Leaders of political parties in Chile met this Monday (12) to outline the process for a new constitution and agreed to entrust the drafting of the text to a body elected 100% by the citizens.
“I believe that no one who entered that meeting today (…) thought that we would leave with such important agreements,” Raúl Soto, speaker of the House of Representatives, told the media. Convention center in Santiago…
“We are moving forward with firm steps,” added the deputy government.
On September 4, 62% of citizens rejected the new Constitution proposal prepared by the Constitutional Convention, whose members were elected by popular vote with gender equality and 17 reserved indigenous seats.
This Monday, it has been decided that the body responsible for writing the new text will be re-elected by the people, but the number of members has yet to be determined. The convention previous attempt had 155.
As before, the writing will now be supported by a committee of experts, although the format has yet to be determined.
The new example will also be partisan, and voting in the plebiscite will be mandatory, as in the failed process.
“We are very hopeful for the outcome of today’s dialogue,” said Ana Lya Uriarte, the Secretary General of the Presidency, who also participated in the negotiations.
A survey published this Monday by the private institute Cadem showed that 67% of Chileans favored drafting a new Constitution after the first proposal was rejected.
