A relative found the 77-year-old man seriously injured at his home in Redmond, about 400 kilometers south of Perth, on Monday.

When the paramedics arrived at the rural property, the kangaroo prevented them from looking after it.

The police had to shoot and kill the marsupial. The man died at the scene.

A police spokesperson told the media that he believed the man had been attacked by a wild animal, a kangaroo, earlier in the day.

Australia is home to approximately 50 million kangaroos, which can weigh up to 90 kg and measure up to 2 meters in length.

But deadly attacks are rare – this is the first recorded attack in Australia since 1936.

Kangaroo behavior expert Graeme Coulson told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation that kangaroos have “many weapons” such as sharp teeth, claws and strong legs.

“Certainly, if they’re cornered or in some kind of anguish, it can be pretty dangerous,” Coulson said. Said.

“The problem with kangaroos and humans is that they’re both upright animals, we’re standing, and an upright posture like this is a challenge for the male kangaroo.”

In July, a kangaroo was injured and broke her leg after attacking a 67-year-old woman on a march in Queensland.

And a three-year-old girl suffered a serious head injury during an attack in New South Wales in March.

Urban development across Australia is increasingly taking over wild kangaroo habitats.
