The United States has recorded the first monkeypox-related death in the country, according to information from the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, California.
According to a statement released by the department, the victim was a “severely immunocompromised” patient who was hospitalized.
“Severely immunocompromised persons who suspect they have monkeypox should seek medical attention and seek early treatment for the duration of the illness,” the statement said.
William Schaffner, professor of infectious diseases at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, told CNN that “the patient’s weakened immune system is unable to control the virus.” The expert also noted that “it multiplied irresistibly and possibly spread to different organs.”
The United States Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 22,000 probable or confirmed cases of monkeypox were reported in the country in 2022.
Meanwhile, the National Institutes of Health (Nih) has launched a study on the effectiveness of the antiviral Tpoxx in people affected by the disease. The drug, which can be given as a pill or directly into a vein, was recently approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the country’s drug control agency.
