More than 200 military personnel were killed in clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border this week, according to new figures from both countries on Friday.
Armenia and Azerbaijan blame each other for fighting in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region – the bloodiest conflict between them since a six-week war that left thousands dead in 2020.
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reported at a meeting of the Armenian parliament earlier this week that 105 Armenians were killed.
Azerbaijan said 77 of its representatives from Thursday’s 71 tally had died. Both countries said the numbers will rise.
The two sides have been fighting for decades for Nagorno-Karabakh, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but inhabited and controlled by ethnic Armenians until a war in 2020.
Armenia said that Azerbaijani forces attacked and captured settlements in Nagorno-Karabakh, as well as Armenia, this week. Azerbaijan says it is responding to “provocations” from the Armenian side.
Pashinyan said on Friday that a ceasefire brokered by Moscow had ended the last war on Wednesday night, but the border situation was tense.
