Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi told Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday that now is not the time for war, and directly attacked the Kremlin chief over the nearly seven-month conflict in Ukraine.
Caught in a showdown with the West over the war, Putin has repeatedly said Russia is not isolated because it can look east to major Asian powers like China and India.
But worries spread at a Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
“I know that today’s era is not an era of war, and I talked to you on the phone about it,” Modi told Putin at a television meeting in the former Uzbek Silk Road city of Samarkand.
Putin told Modi that he understands that the Indian leader is worried about Ukraine, but that Moscow is doing everything it can to end the conflict.
“I know your stance on the conflict in Ukraine, your concerns that you constantly voice,” Putin said. “We will do our best to finish this job as soon as possible.”
The war in Ukraine, which began on February 24 when Putin ordered the invasion of troops, killed tens of thousands of soldiers, launched the worst confrontation with the West since the Cold War, and plunged the global economy into an inflationary spiral.
India has become Russia’s second-largest oil buyer after China, as others cut purchases after the invasion.
