A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck southeast Taiwan on Sunday, derailing train cars and causing a market building to collapse.
Taiwan fire brigade said that four people were rescued from a collapsed building in Yuli, while three people whose vehicles had fallen from a damaged bridge were rescued and taken to hospital.
The Taiwan Railway Administration said six cars were derailed after part of the platform’s awning collapsed at Dongli station in eastern Taiwan, but firefighters said no injuries.
The local government said more than 600 people were stranded in the mountainous areas of Chike and Liushishi because of the barricades, but there were no injuries and rescuers were working to reopen the roads.
Buildings shook briefly in the capital, Taipei, and aftershocks continued to shake the island. Science parks in the southern cities of Tainan and Kaohsiung, which are home to large semiconductor factories, said there was no impact on operations.
Taiwan is near the junction of two tectonic plates and is prone to earthquakes.
More than 100 people lost their lives in the earthquake that occurred in southern Taiwan in 2016, while more than 2000 people lost their lives in the 7.3 magnitude earthquake in 1999.
