New York State Attorney General Letitia James announced Wednesday that her group will file a civil lawsuit against former US President Donald Trump and several of his children after investigating tax practices.
“We are taking legal action against Donald Trump for breaking the law to profit for himself, his family and his business,” the prosecutor said at a news conference.
According to the prosecutor, the Trump Organization would illegally inflate the value of their properties, including golf courses, hotels and other assets, and fraud would occur in all of the former president’s businesses. The purpose of the action would be to deceive insurers and creditors to get more credit than is allowed.
Officially, the defendants are Donald Trump, in addition to his sons Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Ivanka Trump. In addition, the company’s former CFO Allen Weisselberg and long-time executive Jeff McConney are also mentioned.
Investigations have been ongoing since 2019, and now the next step will be to send the case to federal prosecutors in Manhattan. Letitia James proposed shutting down the Trump Organization, reimbursing affected creditors $250 million, and appointing an independent audience to oversee financial transactions by the company.
Trump still faces three more investigations. One of them explores attempts to reverse the Republican’s 2020 electoral defeat on false pretenses; another, again related to the election, explores the attempt by the former president and his allies to intervene in the state of Georgia. He is also accused of removing confidential and sensitive documents from the White House.
