US President Joe Biden said at a press conference at the White House yesterday that it “doesn’t make sense” to send immigrants back to Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba. According to El País, the announcement came at a time when Republican governors used it as a political game and sent immigrants to Democratic strongholds such as Washington, New York and Chicago.

Even before the end of September, the North American country has already exceeded the number of immigration detentions at the Mexican border, reaching two million people a year. The record puts pressure on the Biden administration, which hopes to divert this issue away from the main issues of November’s legislative elections.

The American president stated in his speech that he is facing “special” immigration-related situations. “There are fewer immigrants from Mexico and Central America. Now I’m looking at Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba,” Biden said. The chief executive also admitted that it “doesn’t make sense” to repatriate these people.

In addition to sending immigrants to Democratic states, Republican governors have considered sending them to Delaware, the home state of the current resident of the White House. He jokingly agreed. “Visit Delaware, it’s beautiful.”

High number of immigration arrests

According to El País, Border Patrol agents arrested 204,000 people in August and 293,000 this month alone. CBP (Customs and Border Protection) estimates that more than 2.3 million arrests will be made by the end of September.

This number is high thanks to the increase in arrivals of Cubans, Venezuelans and Nicaraguans to the United States, in addition to refugees from Russia and Ukraine. CBP’s commissioner, Chris Magnus, blamed “failed communist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua and Cuba” for the new wave of immigration in the Western Hemisphere that has raised concerns at its southern border. He said on Monday that the lack of diplomatic relations with these countries has made repatriation difficult.

CBP arrested 600,000 people by September last year, when 1.7 million arrests were recorded.
