Russia arrests Japanese consul on suspicion of espionage

The Russian intelligence service has arrested a Japanese consul in Vladivostok on suspicion of espionage.

According to Tass news agency, in a statement released by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), diplomat Motoki Tatsunori was caught “red-handed” collecting classified information about the impact of Western sanctions on the economic situation in Moscow.

The classified information Tatsunori sees will also relate to Russia’s cooperation with an unidentified country in the Asian continent. The documents were obtained by the Japanese in exchange for a cash prize.

An official protest was held in Tokyo as the Japanese proclaimed “persona non grata” on Russian soil.
