Teacher in India accused of beating his student to death for misspelling

Authorities quelled protests over the boy’s death, saying on Tuesday that Indian police were searching for a teacher accused of beating a lower-caste student to death because of a typo.

According to his father’s complaint, Nikhil Dohre was beaten with a stick and kicked out of consciousness by his high school teacher for misspelling a word in an exam earlier this month.

The 15-year-old died yesterday from his injuries at a hospital in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Your teacher is running.

“He is on the run but we will arrest him soon,” police officer Mahendra Pratap Singh told AFP.

Dohre was a member of the Dalit community, which is at the root of India’s caste system and has suffered from prejudice and discrimination for centuries.

Hundreds of people took to the streets on Monday after news of Dohre’s death spread in the district of Auraiya, where the incident took place.

The crowd demanded the teacher’s arrest and set a police car on fire. Singh said a dozen protesters were detained.
