Live in contact with nature. Enjoying the sun and the wind, sailing the rivers, getting to know the cities… It won’t be the best proposition for those who like to work from home, but it will be for nature lovers and those who like to visit some of the most picturesque parts of the world. They offer $50,000 a year but surprisingly hardly anyone wants to apply to fill that job opening.

In New Zealand, the Department of Conservation is looking at a “observer of biodiversity” in Haast, which is located on the western edge of Mount Aspiring National Park in the South Island.

According to local media, despite the job offered to the applicant patrolling the most spectacular parts of New Zealand, boat trips and even some helicopter rides, only 3 people applied.

“The work is set to take place in one of the most extraordinary natural environments the country has to offer,” South Westland DOC director of operations Wayne Costello told the site. Stuff.

“It’s just spectacular. But it’s not for everyone. You should be self sufficient and be able to work outdoors. If you are interested in opera and theatre, this is probably not for you.says Costello, who – due to a lack of candidates – has launched a broader proposal, also inviting Australians to apply.

“There are some of the original New Zealand families, who pioneered farming and fishing in that part of the world. They’re really fascinating, says Costello.

But the region isn’t for everyone, especially those who enjoy a bit of city life, with only around 200 residents living in the city and the nearest supermarket about a two-hour drive away.

But, of course, the offer has its particularities. Is that the place of settlement, with exuberant tropical jungles, glaciers and towering mountains, has the same World Heritage status as the Great Barrier Reef and Grand Canyon.

Some difficulties too – the nearest supermarket is two hours away and the nearest hospital is a four hour drive from Greymouth. Cell phone coverage is a recent development, but service is spotty.

Haast has a population of only 200. The main goal of this work is “to save the kiwi and bring Haast’s tokoeka back from the brink,” says Costello.

“Then also the wildlife response with tawaki, usually when there’s been an injury or something. And we’re doing an outstanding job with lizards, waterfall geckos and skinks, which are just amazing.”

Traveling by helicopter and even speedboat, the daily commute to work is exhilarating. Salary seems impossible to rule out, but obviously this proposition isn’t for everyone.
