Faced with the same difficulties, London’s Heathrow airport announced Tuesday that it would limit the number of departing passengers to 100,000 a day for two months, or 4,000 fewer than planned.

The manager of Frankfurt airport, the first German hub, said on Friday that he wanted to reduce the flight schedule this summer due to a lack of staff that has already led Lufthansa to cut thousands of connections.

The Fraport group “will submit an application to the Federal Ministry of Transport at the beginning of next week to reduce the hourly rotations at Frankfurt airport from 96 to 88” takeoffs and landings, a spokeswoman for the manager told AFP.

“The goal is to further stabilize the air operations” of the first German airport that are severely disrupted during this period of holiday departures, this source added.

6,000 flights canceled by Lufthansa

The German company Lufthansa greeted on Friday “a correct decision” by Fraport, according to Jens Ritter, director of the Lufthansa company, quoted in a press release.

The main European airline group has taken the lead in reducing its flight plan for this summer in several waves in recent weeks. In total, Lufthansa has canceled almost 6,000 flights to and from the “hubs” of Frankfurt and Munich.

Once Fraport’s request is accepted in Berlin, it will be about “intensifying talks with other airlines” with a view to obtaining “further relief measures” for the program, according to the spokeswoman.

Up to 1,250 aircraft serving 285 destinations currently take off and land in Frankfurt every day, around 80% of which are attributable to the Lufthansa Group and its Star Alliance partners.

Faced with the same difficulties, London’s Heathrow airport announced on Tuesday that it would limit the number of departing passengers to 100,000 per day for two months, or 4,000 less than its forecast, asking companies to stop selling plane tickets for the summer. .
