As explained by the Writers Guild of America West (WGAW), “the responses from the studies were wholly inadequate given the existential crisis that writers are facing”, and for this reason its Board of Directors, in concert with the Council of the Writers Guild of America East, has decided to avail itself “of the authority granted them by its members” and to call the measure of force, which could have catastrophic consequences.

In parallel, it was specified that the decision was made after six weeks of negotiations with Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Warner Bros Discovery, NBCUniversal, Paramount Plus and Sony, which are “under the umbrella” of the Producers Alliance of Film and television (AMPTP, for its acronym in English).

What is the Hollywood Writers Union asking for?

The stake is “determine”. how we will be compensated financially for the ‘streaming'”, not just now but in the future, added the industry writer contacted by AFP.

Many of the issues are similar to those discussed in the industry globally.

The writers say they are having a hard time making a living stagnant or devalued wages due to inflationwhile their employers earn and raise the salaries of their executives.

They estimate that there have never been so many screenwriters working for the minimum wage set by unions, as TV networks hire fewer people to write increasingly shorter series.

One major disagreement concerns how screenwriters are paid for series broadcast by streaming platformswhich in spaces like Netflix usually remain viewable for years.

Film studios under pressure to cut costs

The studies, represented by the Alliance of film and television producers (AMPTP), point out that the “residual royalties” paid to screenwriters have reached a record level of $494 million in 2021, compared to $333 million a decade earlier.

They also refute suggestions that the firms falsely claim financial hardship to strengthen their bargaining position.

The industry fears a domino effect and a major strike

Both will have their conversations with the studios this summer.

“The greatest benefit we collectively bring to a strike is the withdrawal of our work”, the WGA wrote to its members Sunday, according to Variety, which cited a message it had access to.
