A Strange LoopMichael R. Jackson captured the critically acclaimed theatrical meta-journey 11 nominations for Tony Awardswhen Broadway joined the national race discussion by hosting a groundbreaking musical written and directed by black artists.

Jackson’s 2020 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama about a black gay writing a play about a black gaywas nominated for best musical, best actor for newcomer Jaquel Spivey and best actress for L Morgan Lee, who became the first openly transgender artist to be nominated for a Tony Award.

The nominees for best actress in a musical were Sharon D. Clarke for Caroline, Or ChangeFoster is not The Music ManKatrina Lenkby companyJoaquina Kalukango by Paraiso SquareCarmen Cusack is flying at sunset and Mare Winningham for Girl From The North Country.

Along with Spivey, Jackman and McClure was for the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical Crystal for Mr. Saturday Night and Myles Frost, whose portrayal of Michael Jackson in MJ is considered a success.

The deadline for eligibility for the 2021-2022 season was returned to May 4 after some Broadway shows had to cancel performances due to reported COVID-19 cases with cast and crew.

The Tony Awards will be delivered at Radio City Music Hall on June 12 at a ceremony hosted by Ariana DeBose that will air live on CBS and Paramount+ beginning 8 pm New York (0000 GMT).
