Rian Johnson, the American director –Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi-, who also wrote the screenplay for Knives out, earned an Oscar nomination in the original screenplay category. The film also aspired to three Golden Globes.

Netflix and the birth of a saga

In the 2019 film, Daniel Craig plays Benoit Blanc, a detective tasked with putting the pieces together after famed mystery writer Harlan Thrombey (Christopher Plummer) mysteriously dies on the night of his 85th birthday.

Particularly praised was the performance of the British actor – who has long eluded James Bond – and this led to the creation of a spin-off cinematic universe.

Although Lionsgate released the first film in theaters, Netflix is ​​now the legitimate owner of the franchise after purchasing the rights for $ 450 million in an auction held in April 2021.

The cast of the sequel is once again star-studded. The list includes Edward Norton, Ethan Hawke, Janelle Monáe, Kathryn Hahn, Leslie Odom Jr., Jessica Henwick, Madelyn Cline, Kate Hudson and Dave Bautista.

Johnson, who is working again as a screenwriter and director, also served as a producer with his partner Ram Bergman through their company T-Street. Glass Onions plans to premiere on Netflix globally later this year.

After a shortened version of 2021 and with many remote activities due to the pandemic, the next edition of the Toronto International Film Festival returns to screenings and face to face. Festival organizers will announce more films slated for screening in upcoming September.
