After months of questioning the legacy it carried, the name of Ryerson University in Toronto has now been changed to Toronto Metropolitan University.
The institution’s Board of Governors approved the new name on Tuesday, read a statement, and the decision will take effect immediately.
Our new name […] contains so much about our university, community, students, faculty, staff and alumniindicates the rector and vice-chancellor of the University, Mohamed Lachemi.
” I can think of no better name for our university. [Il] will bind us together for decades to come. “
The post-secondary institution’s website already has the new name, but the domain name ryerson.ca remains active for now.
Since its founding in 1948, the university has been named in memory of Egerton Ryerson, who dedicated his career to the development of education. But his role in establishing residential schools for Aboriginals has come back to the fore in recent years.
The decision to change the name was made in August by a special commission that set strong criticism against what Egerton Ryerson represented.
The University acted immediately after a series of horrific discoveries of hundreds of unmarked children’s graves near several former Indian residential schools across Canada.
During the demonstrations that followed these discoveries, the Ryerson statue seated in front of the university was damaged, then unbolted by participants.
More information to come …
