Tree felling has already begun to create new trails on Mont JS-Bourque, outside the Mont-Bellevue nature reserve, over the next few months.
Trees are cut down in preparation for building rustic walking trails [de randonnée]said Nathalie Bourgeois, head of the parks and green space division of the City of Sherbrooke.
Cutting down approximately 70 trees will make it possible to create 3 km of trails. When we say chopping, it is mainly the trees that are dead or diseased or that present potential hazards for the next users of the trail.said Ms. Bourgeois.
” We work out of respect for nature to reduce the impact on the natural environment “
The resumption of trail development work is scheduled for the end of June or the beginning of July and should take approximately five weeks. The walking trails should be accessible by the end of August.
2.5 km of trails for mountain bikes
For mountain bikes, 2.5 km of new trails are also planned over the next few months, including a connecting trail that will connect Mont-Bellevue to alternative sites. Work on this phase of the project is scheduled to begin in the fall.
Nathalie Bourgeois hopes these new facilities will encourage cyclists from using illegal lanes, which have a negative impact on the environment.
In the summer of 2020, we closed 9 km of illegal trails on Mount JS-Bourquehe says.
