Fire in Little Italy: 20 residents forced to leave their homes
A huge fire broke out overnight from Thursday to Friday in a commercial and residential building in Toronto’s Little Italy district.
No injuries were reported, but about 20 residents had to be evacuated and have not been able to return to their apartments since.
The fire broke out around 1 a.m. Friday. Toronto firefighters were called to the address of a three -story building located at 615 College Street, between Grace and Clinton streets.
Two hours later, more than a hundred firefighters were mobilized to control the blaze.
Many street businesses were damaged, such as Amr Elmazariky, owner of Tut’s restaurant. Egyptian Street Food .
They demolished the entire ceiling, the restorer said. Lots of water damage, but no smoke or fire on the property.
Witness videos show fires erupting from the roof. It possibly started near the back of the building, said on-duty fire chief Tim Algar.
In the prevailing wind last night it blew all the heat and smoke inside the building he assesses.
Firefighters in Toronto and the Office of the Fire Commissioner of Ontario are investigating the cause of the fire.
