Mashteuiatsh Chief Gilbert Dominique and Wendake Grand Chief Rémy Vincent discussed on Tuesday morning, the first time since the start of the conflict between them at the Laurentian Wildlife Reserve.
In a statement, Gilbert Dominique said he had opportunity to talk informally with Rémy Vincent and they both repeated the call for calm.
In this conversation, Mr. Dominique requested that the damaged land be rehabilitated first to initiate any actionas demanded by the formal notice he sent to Wendat’s elected officials last week.
This is an important condition if we want to move forward and start real discussions on new groundswritten by Mr. Dominique.
In our brief discussion this morning, I mentioned again that under no circumstances should political or legal differences affect our members and the practice of traditional.He added.
Still according to Chief Dominique, members of the two communities could continue to occupy the territory without fear for their safety.
On June 4, a member of the Mashteuiatsh community denounced the vandalism done by the Wendake council on the land he occupied in the Laurentides Wildlife Reserve.
A complaint was filed with the Sûreté du Québec.
