Norwegian Casper Ruud ended Denis Shapovalov’s excellent run in the tournament in Rome.
Less than 24 hours after his resounding victory against the diminished Rafael Nadal, the Canadian was weakly defeated at 7-6 (9/7) and 7-5 by No. 10 of ATP.
However, Shapovalov had a chance, albeit rarely. He had a point of the sleeve on each of the promises, without him being able to convert them.
Conversely, Ruud was able, using a pick and shovel, to smash Shapovalov for the first time in the game in the 11th game of the second set, after seeing his rival slam the door in his face eight times.
This game, which lasted 14 minutes, was also just one of the battles that ended in the service break.
I’m not as calm as I look, Ruud said in a court interview. There were times, I was nervous at break points, especially against a great server like Shapo. It was my conversion that allowed me to win.
The two players multiplied long exchanges behind the field, varying the arches and angles of their shots.
The more impulsive of the two, Shapovalov often goes to the net to make things happen. In the end, he made 28 winning shots, but he also made 35 unforced errors.
Ruud, on the other hand, is particularly good at serving. He put up 72% of his first serves in play, only two break points given to his Canadian rival.
With a success rate of 63%, Shapovalov exposed himself to the brilliant comeback of his Norwegian rival. Ruud allowed himself 15 break points, but only one was converted. The only break of the battle can make a difference.
In the semi-finals, Ruud will face the winner of the duel scheduled for the night in Rome between Novak Djokokiv and Quebecer Félix Auger-Aliassime.
This will be the first duel between the two players and the first time for Quebecer to face a rival who is leading the world rankings.
It will be a big challenge no matter who I play against, “Ruud said. I want to have a rematch against Djokovic who beat me here in the semi-finals in 2020. He is the best player in the world.
It will be a difficult challenge for anyone else in front of me. I want a rematch against Novak, he is the best player in the world and he was 16 out of 16 in the quarter-finals in Rome.
Under the table, Cristian Garin’s Alexander Zverev didn’t really suffer. By using patience, he logically imposed himself to advance to the semi-finals.
3rd in the world ranking beat the Chilean (45th) in two sets 7-5 and 6-2 in 1 h 51 min.
The German, finalist in Madrid on Sunday, in the semi-finals will face Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas (5th), beating Italian Jannik Sinner (13th) in two sets of 7-6 (7/5) and 6-2.
This will be the third duel in the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 tournament in less than a month between Tsitsipas and Zverev. The Greek won in Monte Carlo in April, while the German took revenge in Madrid last week before losing in the final against Carlos Alcaraz.
Zverev won the Italian Open in 2017.
