Less than 24 hours after being traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, former Canadiens captain Shea Weber said goodbye to Montreal fans in a letter released by the team.
The defender played five seasons in a CH uniform before staying out last winter due to an accumulation of injuries. It would be surprising if he returned to the game.
The Habs acquired Weber from the Nashville Predators on June 29, 2016 in exchange for PK Subban.
Ever, even in my wildest dream, I never thought to play for the Montreal Canadiens, let alone being the captain of this team, he wrote in his message. Wearing this legendary jersey every night is one of the greatest honors of my career, and it’s something I value every chance I get.
I want to thank my teammates, the coaches, management, the entire organization, Geoff Molson and the Molson family, the Montreal media and, most of all, the fans who welcomed me and my family and did this town as a second home.
Montreal will always have a place in my heart. Thank you for everythinghe concludes.
The Canadiens traded him to the Golden Knights for forward Evgenii Dadonov on Thursday. The team was therefore relieved of the burden of managing the 36-year-old defender’s contract, which is on the long-term injury list.
Weber was the 30th captain in the history of Sainte-Flanelle. He registered 58 goals and 88 assists in 275 games in Montreal.
In 2020-21, he led the team to its first Stanley Cup Final in 28 years.
