Danny De Vito. He is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, but has other roles as a director and also as a producer of classics such as Pulp Fiction and Erin Brockovic, among others.
DeVito is also a music fanatic. And not just a genre: when DeVito participated as a guest DJ for the radio station KCRW of Santa Monica, California. He proposed five songs from across the musical spectrum.
Some seemed to please DeVito, while others were a pleasant surprise to him.
The five songs chosen by Danny DeVito
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been a huge fan of music,” explained DeVito. “I’m obviously a boy from New Jersey. I was born in Asbury.”
DeVito added that “not far from Asbury a very famous singer was born: his name was Bruce Springsteen. He is one of my favorites“.
DeVito noted that one of Springsteen’s darkest songs, “Palace on the hill“, it would be on his favorite list.” When I first heard this song in Nebraska, I thought: ‘I feel very identified with this‘”.
Danny de Vito’s next favorite musician is Bob Dylan. “I’m a huge fan of Dylan, and always have been.“, said the actor. For his choice, he opted for the poignant single from the mid-60s:”Positively 4th Street“It has a kind of fierce touch,” the actor said.
Lesser known artists that Danny DeVito likes
To cope with a love breakup, a friend came to see how he was doing and advised an old school R&B track by Philadelphia-based vocal group The Castelles.
“I had a friend who is a singer in Asbury Park. He’s a really good singer, his name is Nicky Addeo. And I was going through a heartbreak, I mean really out of my mind,” DeVito said.
“I was in the basement one day and I was listening to Etta James and Dinah Washington, whatever was blues, and this friend pulled out a song and said: ‘This is the song for you. ‘ And his name is ‘Over A Cup Of Coffee‘. It is of the Castles. It has always been one of my pillars, all these years“.
DeVito also confessed to being “an opera fanatic. My favorite diva is Maria Callas,” DeVito said. “Love coarse, is by Giacomo Puccini, of course. My favorite part is Tosca’s Act II: ‘Visit of art‘.
For his final choice, DeVito chose Mike Patton. The singer of legendary bands like Faith No More and Mr. Bungle. DeVito saw Patton during the Coachella Music and Arts Festival and was shocked.
“I went back to listening to Mr. Bungle, Faith No More and all those things,” DeVito explains.
“Anyway, a year or two ago,Mike Patton created a new group called Peeping Tom, and on that record is the song Five seconds. The great thing about that song is that you want to hear it so much. The letter is incredible. When she says “you are the air I breathe”, it drives me crazy. There is a kind of anguish, but it is also a declaration of love “.
