Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy added on Saturday that Russian forces had destroyed important infrastructure in the southern city of Kherson before fleeing, adding that local authorities had begun to stabilize the city.
Residents enthusiastically greeted the soldiers in the center of Kherson on Friday, after Russia left the only regional capital it had captured since the start of the war.
“Before fleeing Kherson, the occupation forces destroyed all critical infrastructure: communications, water, heating, electricity,” Zelenskiy wrote in a video address.
“The (Russians’) goal is the same everywhere: to humiliate people as much as possible. But believe me, we will restore everything.”
Zelensky claimed that Ukrainian troops took control of more than 60 settlements in the Kherson region.
“The police started stabilization measures. Stability measures continue in Kherson,” he said.
