Russia turned down the Vatican’s offer to host final peace talks with Ukraine.
“The Chechen and Buryat brothers will not be happy,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said this Monday (12). “There was no word of apology from the Vatican, as I recall,” she added.
Zakharova cites a recent interview in which Pope Francis accused Chechen troops and Buryats, two peoples that are part of the Russian Federation, of perpetrating “persecution in Ukraine”.
The statement came under criticism in Moscow, and the Vatican has never sought to resize the Pope’s speeches, at least in public.
Despite that, on Monday morning Vatican Foreign Minister Cardinal Pietro Parolin said the country would be “proper ground” to host possible talks between Russia and Ukraine.
Parolin said, “We are trying to offer opportunities for everyone to come together and establish a balance, we offer a space where the parties can come together and initiate a dialogue,” said Parolin, emphasizing that he still does not see “positive spirals”. .
