Every 10-year population count conducted by the United States Census Bureau shows more variety in the list than most common surnames in the country. Generally the main ones are Smith, Johnson, Williams, Brown and Jones.
However, the increase in immigration over the last three decades has led to a great diversity of people with very different origins: European, Asian and Latin American.
The Queen Sofía Spanish Institute reported that six of the 15 most common surnames in the United States are of Hispanic origin. It is expected that within a few years there will be others, given that in the 1990 census no surname of this origin was listed; in 2000 there were already four and in 2010 there were six. The census carried out between 2020 and 2021 (the most recent) has not yet been published.
