Dozens of armed police attacked the private residence of the prime minister of Haiti, Ariel Henry -which is in Argentina- in the context of a protest movement against the indifference of the authorities in the face of the death of more than ten agents at the hands of armed groups this month.
In the midst of the attack on Henry’s residence, located in the Delmas sector 60, in Port-au-Prince, material damage was recorded and felt strong blowswhile several vehicles ended up with the broken glassaccording to local media reports.
The prime minister expects to return this Thursday from Argentina, where he attended the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) summit on Tuesday.
To prevent the landing of the plane that will take them to the country, the demonstrators went to Toussaint Louverture airport in Port-au-Prince, where they erected barricades and burnt tires, causing a traffic stop.
The tension in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and its surroundings is highest this Thursday, in which constant shothours after seven police officers were killed by armed groups in Savien, Haitian department of Artibonite, bringing the number of officers killed to ten violently in two weeks.
Given the tense situation, some schools have sent their students home and the population tends to abandon the streets of the capital, where the police presence has been low in recent days.
In 2022, at least 55 agents were assassinated in the country, in a context marked by deterioration of the security climate and dominated by armed attacks, the multiplication of kidnappingsrobberies and rapes.
Immersed in a socio-political and economic crisis for years, Haiti has seen its situation deteriorate further after the July 2021 assassination of then-President Jovenel Moïse.
