The M62 bear, considered a very dangerous animal, was found dead in Trentino, Italy, by a group of hikers. The wounds on the body of M62, probably found dead in Brenta, on Lake Molveno they are due to the attack of an adult male bear.

But the controversy is installed. A few weeks ago another bear, identified as JJ4, attacked and killed a runner in the area. Now the death of the bear generates emotion and neighbors are asking to investigate whether he was actually killed deliberately by a person.

Bear fights can take place throughout the year; in the mating season, which has already begun, this risk increases. The 5-year-old M62 bear was identified by ear tags placed on it in November 2021.

That year the M62 bear had been monitored with satellite telemetry and its range that year – according to the Province’s Large Carnivores Report – was 217 square kilometers.

M62 was one of four cubs (exceptional litter in terms of number, highlighted in the Report) which also included bear F43, who died in September 2022 due to an incorrect dose of anesthetic administered to replace the radio collar he had been wearing since July 2021.

In that litter there was also the male M57, who on the afternoon of 22 August 2020, around 10.30 pm, attacked a policeman on the illuminated promenade that leads from the Andalo sports area to the nearby lake, for which he was captured and locked up in the Casteller Wildlife Center.

According to the 2021 Report, M62 had already approached inhabited centers several times in 2020, especially in Val di Sole, while the following year it had done so on the Paganella plateau.

M62 had been equipped with a radio collar which had been the subject of “repeated deterrence actions when the bear became the protagonist of undesirable behaviour, such as entering inhabited centres”.

The interaction lasted a long time, about ten minutes, during which the bear showed extreme trust/acceptance of the nearby presence of the four hunters, despite their attempts to chase him away”.

After the discovery of the bear’s body, the animal rights associations went mad, Leal, Odv and Zampe sent the Forestry Corps of the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Venice a request for access to the documents relating to the find and also asked to be able to participate in the autopsy of the animal.

Oipa and Enpa also ask to know the causes of death.
