Walnut tea: what it is for and who can consume it

Nut tea is a curious infusion that can be beneficial when combined with a healthy diet or guided by a specialist.

Nutrition graduate Mayara Belli Famivita recommends preparing it by putting three tablespoons of dry leaves in a liter of filtered water boiled for two and ten minutes of rest.

A beneficial infusion

According to the Center for Food Research and Development (CIAD), nut tea can help lower the level of serum lipidsas well as slowing down oxidative stress.

According to Healthline, walnuts also contain omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids that are ideal for stimulate the functioning of the nervous system and neural activity.

Walnut is also a natural source of fibers, phytosterols and antioxidantssuch as vitamin E, and serves, like other nuts, for the body to produce collagen and, in this way, slows down the aging of the skin.

Another of its virtues has to do with her calming effect​, which helps to fall asleep and reduce headaches.

Who can eat nuts?

Belli states that the walnut infusion can be used by the whole family. Sure: it is essential to have the recommendation of a specialist becauseHe nut tea has contraindications.

One of its probable adverse effects is the allergy. In its excessive consumption, moreover, it can give diarrhea. That is why it is recommended that people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome not consume it.

It is suggested to consume nuts not rich in sugar or salt so that they have favorable effects on the heart and reduce the probability of having cerebrovascular accidents.

It’s suggested that adults who can eat nuts — so they can drink nut tea — aim to eat about 4 to 6 unsalted servings per week.

In the case of children, the recommendations vary according to age and this is key to be determined by a pediatrician.

The Dangerous Cashew Nut

Attention: Do not confuse nut tea with cashew tea, a dangerous seed/diuretic banned in Argentina and other parts of the world.

Indian walnut, also known as “miracle seed”, is a diuretic that is unofficially marketed promising to be the solution to overweight. Its consumption can bring fatal consequences..

It possesses a dangerous substance which contains toxic compounds called toxalbumins, cardiac glycosides and cyanide.

Nutrition specialist Mónica Katz explained that some of its adverse effects are described as decompensations ranging “from stomach upset, gas, nausea, vomiting, body aches and headaches, due to the loss of sodium and potassium, it can cause malnutrition, loss of electrolytes and dehydration due to severe diarrhoea to death“.

Potassium loss is one of the most serious consequencessince “it is essential for the proper functioning of muscles, including the heart, and could even cause heart rhythm disturbances or arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest”.

In 2017, its intake caused three deaths in Brazil. The following month, four people were admitted to Concordia, Entre Ríos.

The prohibition of Anmat is based on the monitoring carried out by specialized personnel of the product, “which has shown that its use is not safe and, even, there are records of serious adverse effects after its consumption”.

The product called seed from India “is prohibited throughout the national territory (Argentine) pursuant to ANMAT Provision No. 309/2014”.
