Biden reaffirms that the U.S. does not support Taiwan independence

The United States announced on the 13th (local time) that it welcomes the victory of Lai Ching-de, the pro-American, independence-oriented ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) candidate, in Taiwan’s presidential election.

U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken issued a statement about the Taiwan presidential election on the State Department website that day, saying, “The United States congratulates Lai Ching-de on his election victory.”

“We also once again congratulate the people of Taiwan for demonstrating their strong democratic institutions and the strength of the election process,” he said.

He emphasized, “The United States promises to maintain peace and stability in cross-strait relations (China and Taiwan), resolve differences peacefully, and provide freedom from coercion and pressure.”

Secretary of State Blinken said, “The partnership between the American people and the people of Taiwan, rooted in democratic values, continues to expand and deepen beyond economic, cultural, and people-to-people relationships.”

In particular, he emphasized, “We look forward to working with Lai Ching-de and leaders of all political parties in Taiwan to advance our common interests and values, and to further develop our long-standing informal relationship consistent with the United States.”

He also said, “We are confident that Taiwan will continue to be an example to all who strive for freedom, democracy, and prosperity.”
