The entry into NATO of a candidate country is assumed to be an entrance exam in which applicants must convince each of the 30 members of the Alliance what their contribution will be and their capacity to respond to the obligations of the common agreement.
The process is codified because once a country has made a decision to request to be part of the agreement, NATO members must be accepted united and extended the invitation.
Turkey, a member of the Alliance, expressed reservations with the integration of Finland and Sweden. However, some participants at an informal meeting of NATO foreign ministers in Berlin on Sunday believed that a consensus could be reached.

Obligations

The last stage is the ratification of the accession protocol of each NATO member state, which sends their consent for the entry of a new member into the United States government, which is the depositary of the North Atlantic Treaty.
The slogan “One for all and all for one” stated in article 5 is applied when the ratification of all states is complete.
For the last member state, North Macedonia, this process took a year.
As members of the European Union, Sweden and Finland benefit from the mutual assistance clause provided in article 42-7 for the duration of the ratification process of its accession to NATO.
