Washington, May 19, 2022 (AFP) – The Oklahoma Parliament on Thursday passed a law banning abortion from birth, making this conservative southern stronghold in the United States the state with the strictest regulations for abortion.

The vote came after a Supreme Court document was leaked in which it was willing to overturn the decision 50 years ago that guaranteed that right, at a time when the right to abortion was threatened in the United States.

For the Oklahoma text to go into effect, it now has to be passed into law by Republican Governor Kevin Stitt.

Inspired by a law passed by Texas in September, Oklahoma’s new rule opens the door for citizens to file lawsuits against people suspected of having abortions.

However, according to the text, the definition of abortion does not include “the use, prescription, supply or sale of morning-after pills or any other form of emergency contraception.”

US Vice President Kamala Harris described the Oklahoma vote as “the latest in a series of blatant attacks on women by lawmakers.”

It also urged Americans to elect leaders who advocate abortion rights at the “local, state, and federal levels.” The United States celebrates the midterm elections in November.

“This has never been more urgent,” he tweeted.

Planned Parenthood, which advocates for abortion rights, announced that it will “sue Oklahoma”.

Governor Stitt announced on May 3 that she had signed a law banning abortion after six weeks of pregnancy.

While consultations show that abortion is supported by most Americans, it has been a highly polarized issue since the 1973 “Roe v. Wade” decision that guaranteed the right to terminate a pregnancy.

Should the Supreme Court bury the right at the federal level, the 50 states in the Union will decide whether abortion is a crime, in a decision expected before June 30.

Twenty-six states, mostly led by conservatives in the center and south of the country, are expected to ban voluntary termination of pregnancy.
