At least 19 children and two teachers were killed in the attack, the deadliest incident in an American elementary school since the Sandy Hook massacre a decade ago.

Some children received awards for their excellent school work. Another boy was known to enjoy dancing. One student was described as “the sweetest I’ve ever met”.

These are some of the 19 children aged seven to ten who were killed, along with two teachers, last Tuesday (24/05) at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

The perpetrator was identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, who was killed by the police at the crime scene.

This is the bloodiest shooting at an American elementary school since the murder of 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook High School in Connecticut a decade ago.

Some parents were at the Texas school hours before the attack and proudly watched their children receive their certificates of honor at an awards ceremony. Hours later they had to return.

Amerie Jo Garza He was one of the first children whose death was confirmed. He had just celebrated his 10th birthday two weeks ago.

Grandma Berlinda Irene Arreola was shot while trying to call the emergency room, she told the American digital newspaper The Daily Beast.

In the tweet below, a reporter reveals that Amerie received a certificate before she was killed in the attack.

Her grandmother added that Amerie was “overly extroverted” and “well-liked by her teachers”.

Meanwhile, a relative wrote on Facebook: “Please don’t think for a moment that everything is guaranteed. Hug your family. Tell them you love them.”

Xavier Javier LopezThe 10-year-old was a great swimmer, remembered for his 54-year-old cousin, Lisa Garza.

“I was a loving 10-year-old boy enjoying life without knowing that this tragedy would happen today,” he said.

“She was very happy, she loved to dance with her siblings, with her mother. It impressed us all.”

Renfro remembered the last time he had seen his grandson during the school holidays when they played football together.

“He was a very fast kid and could catch the ball very well,” his grandfather said. “There were some games that I made, that he remembers and played just like we practiced.”

‘Worst nightmare’

Eva Mireles, 44, became the first teacher whose death was confirmed. Bilingual and special education graduate, he had been teaching fourth-year students in the Uvalde school district for 17 years.

He wrote of his love of running and walking in a short biography posted on the district’s website. She also noted that she has “an understanding, fun and loving family” consisting of her husband, graduate daughter and “three furry friends”.

According to US media, Mireles’ husband Rubén Ruiz, a police officer from the same school district, had simulated a shooting at Uvalde’s school just two months ago.

His aunt, Lydia Martínez Delgado, expressed her sadness in a post she shared on Facebook, saying she was “angry that this filming continued”. “Unimaginable… worst nightmare,” said her cousin, Cristina Arizmendi Mirelez.

In the tweet below, a student’s mother lauded Mireles on Twitter, saying she “believes” in the teacher’s daughter.

Married for 24 years, mother of four, she loved to barbecue and listen to music with her husband.

According to NBC’s report, his son said that a friend of the police officer at the scene saw his mother protecting her students when the gunman opened fire.

Another family member, nephew John, wrote on social media: “My aunt couldn’t stand it, she sacrificed herself to protect the kids in her class.”
