PALERMO, MAY 28 (ANSA) – Italian authorities are investigating a fire that recently destroyed half the vegetation on the volcanic island of Stromboli, off Sicily.
The mayor of neighboring Lipari, Marco Giorgianni, said he would call for a “state of natural disaster” after the flames had reached dozens of hectares in the past 48 hours.
The fire was brought under control with the support of firefighters and volunteers sent by ferry from Lipari. Carabiners were also placed in the area to protect locals and tourists from harm.
The extent of the damage is being evaluated, but Giorgianni says it will likely be “enormous.” The local authority launched an investigation to determine the causes of the fire, as preliminary information began during the recording of the TV series “Civil Protection” directed by Marco Pontecorvo.
According to the information obtained, the flames were part of the crime scene and spread out of control due to the strong wind and spread to the slopes of the mountain.
Giorganni explained that the flames had “destroyed half the vegetation, leaving a large black stain on dozens of hectares” of the small island, but thankfully did not cause any personal injury.
“It will be the authorities who will determine who is responsible for the fire that destroyed almost half of the island’s vegetation and some buildings,” said Salvo Cocina, Director of Civil Defense for Italy, who visited the island in the last few hours. and risking the safety of the population”.
