Moscow, June 10, 2022 (AFP) – Russia on Friday stepped out of a World Tourism Organization (WTO) official who suspended it in April amid a global wave of anger sparked by military action in Ukraine.
The government “accepts the proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry (…) to withdraw the Russian Federation from the World Tourism Organization”, reads the decree signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.
UNWTO, a Madrid-based UN agency, announced in April that Russia was suspending military intervention in Ukraine on the grounds that it went against the agency’s “values”.
Since the conflict in Ukraine began in February, Russia has faced increasing diplomatic isolation. Organizations that exclude him include the UN Human Rights Council, which suspended its participation in early April.
The country also faces harsh economic sanctions imposed by Western countries.
