At least 11 people were killed and 26 injured, three seriously, when a bus carrying 37 passengers returning from a pilgrimage in the municipality of Tila in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas overturned the State Civil Protection System. .

“A truck carrying pilgrims to the municipality of Nacajuca in Tabasco state overturned today,” the authorities said, providing a list of the injured and dead.

According to authorities, Black Christ devotees were returning to their place of origin, in the state of Tabasco, after attending the annual religious festival, when suddenly the bus driver lost control and the vehicle crashed into the valley.

Tulijá Tseltal Chol’s Civil Protection delegation confirmed to Efe that nine people had died, but the number rose to 11 after they were hospitalized.

The injured are being treated at hospitals in Tila, Salto de Agua and Palenque, and officials estimate the death toll could rise.

Authorities in Chiapas mobilized a total of ten ambulances and a helicopter through the Civil Protection Secretariat’s Air Rescue Directorate to respond to the wounded.

Rescue and relief teams could not cope with the emergency, so citizens gathered to transport the wounded.

The cause of the accident is unknown, but it is estimated that mechanical malfunctions in the vehicle caused the driver to lose control.
