Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed on Wednesday to start peace talks to reduce tension in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, the office of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian announced.

The Prime Minister’s Office issued the statement after Nikol Pashinian held talks in Brussels with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

The two men agreed to create a bilateral commission to mark a common border by the end of April, the statement said.

The Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijani ask their foreign ministers to start negotiating peace talks between the two countriesit is said.

The President of the European Commission, Charles Michel, also participated in the meeting.

Russia and the United States have expressed concern over recent developments.

A 44-day war erupted between the two former Soviet republics of the Caucasus in the autumn of 2020. It resulted in the deaths of at least 6,500 people and the victory of Azerbaijan.

The conflict in and around the Nagorno -Karabakh enclave – recognized by the international community as an integral part of Azerbaijan and primarily inhabited by Armenians – ended in November 2020 with a ceasefire agreement under Russia. and Moscow’s deployment of a peacekeeping force of nearly 2,000 men.

Nikol Pashinian’s cabinet also said the two sides had agreed to create a bilateral commission on the delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan, which will also be given permission to address security and stability issues along the border. No further details provided.
