Pope Francis stated this Monday that in some parts of the world “It would be convenient to consume less meat” to help the environment, also asking to reduce the use of fossil fuels.

“It is urgent to reduce the consumption not only of fossil fuels, but also of many superfluous things; and equally, in some areas of the world, it would be convenient to consume less meat, this can also help save the environment”, said the pontiff in to message sent to the Youth Conference of the European Union, which takes place in Prague until Wednesday.

In his message, the Pope stressed to young people that “if previous generations have talked a lot and concluded little, you are able to take concrete initiatives“.

In 2015 the Pope published the encyclical Laudato si ‘, in which he raises the concept of “integral ecology” and is considered one of the most important writings on the subject in recent years.

“That’s why I say this moment may be the right one. If they can’t reverse this self-destructive trend, it will be difficult for others to do it in the future,” he summoned them.

The Pope’s message against the war

The pontiff also referred to the war in Ukraine, and that it is “legitimate to rebel” against war when “a few powerful” decide the lives of thousands of people. In turn, he added that if young people and women rule the world, “there wouldn’t be so many wars”.

“The idea of ​​a united Europe was born from a strong yearning for peace after the many wars fought on the continent, and led to a period of seventy years of peace”, explained Francis in a message to the conference participants.

“Now we must all commit ourselves to putting an end to these ravages of war, where, as always, a few powerful decide and send thousands of young people to fight and die. In cases like this it is legitimate to rebel“he said, after mentioning the war in Ukraine and other conflicts that are shaking the world.

According to her, “if the world were governed by women, there would not be many wars, because those who have the mission of giving their lives they cannot make death decisions“.

The Pope also invited young Europeans “not to get carried away by short-sighted ideologies that want to show you the other, the different, as an enemy”.
