Ten people were killed and seven injured when part of a mountain collapsed in a coal mine in China on Saturday, state television CCTV reported.
CCTV added that the accident occurred around 11:15 am (GMT 00:15) in the northwestern province of Gansu and that rescue operations are now over.
CCTV said it was staff who buried workers and vehicles “when a mountain adjacent to the mine collapsed”. In total, 17 people were arrested.
“Ten people died and seven were slightly injured,” state television said, citing local officials, according to the balance sheet on Saturday after a final body was found.
Mine safety has improved in China in recent years, and the press has reported on the accidents, many of which were previously covered up. However, they continue to happen regularly due to the inherent danger of the industry and the sometimes poor enforcement of safety standards, especially in the most primitive installations.
