A group of doctors in Ireland were stunned when an X-ray scan found 55 cells in a woman’s body.

The case was published by the Irish Medical Journal and alleges that the 66-year-old patient swallowed objects with apparent self-harm.

During an appointment at the St. Petersburg University Hospital. Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, medical professionals detected strange shapes on the patient’s body. Upon further analysis, they confirmed it was the heap.

Doctors placed a total of 55 AA (small) and AAA (stick) batteries in the stomach and intestines. Despite this, the woman’s health was good, there was no obstruction in the gastrointestinal tract.

Therefore, they concluded that the batteries would leave the patient’s body in feces at any time.

After a week of waiting, only five AA batteries came out naturally, with the rest stuck in the woman’s stomach and intestines. Later, he started to complain of severe pain in these areas as well.

Doctors then subjected the patient to minor surgery to remove the objects. A simple cut made a narrow hole in the bloated stomach and removed 46 AA and AAA batteries. The remaining four in the colon were withdrawn via the rectum.

“To the best of our knowledge, this case represents the highest number of drug cycles ingested at a single point in time,” said a treating physician in the report, published by the Irish Medical Journal.

Experts pointed out that such cases are rare in adults. Often batteries, buttons or other small objects are swallowed by children.

Doctors were also puzzled by the circumstances of the case, as it was unusual to deliberately swallow so many large AA batteries as a means of self-harm.

The report also warns that ingesting batteries can be highly harmful to organ function and cause side effects. For example, if objects get stuck in the throat, the saliva can trigger an electrical current that creates a chemical reaction that can burn the esophagus. There is also the risk of batteries leaking chemicals inside the body.
