Reuters Johnson to apologize to British Parliament for fine during lockdown

A government official said he would apologize to the UK Parliament on Tuesday as he confronted MPs for the first time since British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was fined by police for violating his own Covid-19 quarantine rules.

Johnson was fined by police last week for attending a birthday party in his honor in June 2020, but people from different families were unable to gather inside.

Opposition parties have called for Johnson’s resignation, accusing him of cheating on parliament after he told lawmakers last year that all rules had been followed on Downing Street, the prime minister’s official residence and workplace during the pandemic.

“When he spoke to Parliament, he was saying what he believed was true,” Brandon Lewis, the UK’s Minister for Northern Ireland, told Sky News.

“He didn’t believe anything he was doing at the time was against the rules, but he certainly admitted that the police were investigating the matter, that they had a different perspective.”

After his sentencing last week, Johnson said it didn’t occur to him that he was breaking the rules, but now admits to being “humble.”

A JL Partners survey for The Times, which asked nearly 2,000 people to briefly give their opinions on the prime minister, showed that 72% of respondents made negative comments, versus 16% positive. According to the survey, the most used word was “liar”.
