American Tori Bowie, triple Olympic medalist at Rio 2016, has died at the age of 32, according to her agency.
The cause of death has not been confirmed, although various sources suggest that the athlete had been battling depression for months. Tori Bowie was born in Mississippi in 1990 and lived her best years between 2015 and 2017.
“We are devastated to share the very sad news of the passing of Tori Bowie. We have lost a client, a dear friend, a daughter and a sister. Tori was a champion… a beacon of light that shone so brightly! We are truly heartbroken and our prayers are with family and friends,” said the notice, which did not specify the cause of her death.
The North American took silver in the 100m, bronze in the 200m and gold in the 4x100m relay in the Brazilian event. She was also a two-time world champion in London 2017 in the 100m and 4x100m, and bronze in the 100m in Beijing 2015, among other achievements.
Tori Bowie was one of the most recognized athletes of the Olympic cycle before the Tokyo Olympics. She won up to eight Diamond League 100m and 200m events between 2014 and 2017 and had an outstanding role in Rio 2016: silver in the 100m behind Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah, bronze in the 200m and gold in the part of the American team in the 4x100m relay.
Individually, he would go on to top at the 2017 World Championships in London. Bowie took gold in the 100m sprint and capped off his event by also winning the short relay with the US team.
