On Tuesday a group of rescuers in India is racing against time to save a 10-year-old deaf and dumb boy who was four days trapped in a well.
The boy, named Rahul Sahu, fell in a very narrow 24 meters deep when he played behind his house, in the state of Chhattisgarh, in central India.
Rescuers are trying to dig a tunnel along the shaft with bulldozers and cranes and with the help of military personnel and members of the disaster response agency.

The boy “responded well” to the rescuers who monitor their status and movements via a cameraJanjgir District Police Chief Vijay Agrawal told AFP on the phone.
“Since the baby can neither speak nor hear, the challenge is even greater,” she said. Indian authorities showed pictures of the workers in a narrow tunnel with lanternsextracting soil little by little to continue to slowly advance towards the minor.
An oxygen tube is supplying the boy with air, but a government spokesman said tunneling was delayed since presence of very hard rocks.
Rescue was also made difficult by the climatic difficulties, added to the presence of poisonous snakes and scorpions that appear as soon as work on the ground begins.
The prime minister of Chhattisgarh Bhupesh Baghel was hoping that the child comes out of the well aliveand he said on Twitter that he could be given a banana.
Wells in Indian farming villages are frequent sites of fatal accidents involving young children.
In 2019, in the northern state of Punjab, a two year old child died in a well after four days of unsuccessful attempts to save him. In the same year, a 1.5-year-old boy was rescued in the nearby state of Haryana after spending two days in a well.
